Assessments and Results
All maintained primary schools in England are required to undertake statutory testing at particular points in the child's education.
In the first term of Reception, a baseline assessment of each child is made. This assessment comprises observations of each child in their learning environment and the children are unaware of the assessments being made.
At the end of the Reception, a profile is created which records whether each child is working at the expected standard in each of the prime and core areas of the EYFS curriculum.
At the end of Year 1, the Phonics Screening Check is administered. Children are asked to read forty real or 'alien' words using the phonics taught. Children who are not able to read most of the words (usually thirty-two or more) are re-tested at the end of Year 2.
At the end of Year 2, children undertake Standardised Assessment Tests (SATs) in Reading and Maths, whilst Writing is teacher assessed. The school also uses the optional spelling test.
At the end of Year 4, children complete the Multiplication Test. This is an on-screen test where children are given five seconds to enter the correct product.
In May, children in Year 6 undertake the KS2 SATs. These are tests in Reading (one paper), Maths (three papers) and Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (two papers). Children are teacher assessed in Writing, with these assessment being moderated externally and with other teachers.
