It is our intention to demonstrate an ongoing and determined commitment to improve children’s lifestyle habits and choices through the teaching and learning of Physical Education at Sherborne C of E Primary School. We aim for all our children to be physically literate and to enjoy physical activity because they:

• use a range of physical skills in games and other activities The expectation is that all children work hard to challenge themselves during their PE lessons. Teachers will help children to understand that, although physical challenges can be difficult, developing physical fitness and abilities is rewarding on many different levels. Whenever possible we employ professional sports associations to run sports clubs outside of school which introduce children to new and diverse sports, including non-competitive sports. Several other sports clubs (football, cricket, tag rugby) are run by teachers.

• Children will be taught in accordance with the National Curriculum and teachers will refer to the school’s curriculum for medium term planning The Six School Games Values

The values below have been chosen by Sainsbury’s School Games. To maintain our Silver Sports Mark, and to promote positive attitudes towards PE, we encourage children to follow these values during PE and at other related events:

• Teamwork The successful approach to the teaching of Physical Education at Sherborne results in a fun, engaging, high quality education. It ensures progress, retention of practical knowledge and provides children with the foundations for keeping fit and healthy that they can take with them once they complete their primary education. We provide memorable experiences that encourage children to enjoy being active and to experience a wide range of ways in which to do so. Children take pride in their physical education and are able to discuss their learning confidently.

The impact of teaching and learning PE is shown through confident individuals who can demonstrate a range of practical knowledge in the form of specific skills taught and also in the form of understanding how their bodies work and the impact that different forms of PE have on it. It is also shown through performance and enjoyment of PE.

We recognise and assess how successfully the school’s aims are met through every day monitoring carried out by class teachers and teaching assistants. This is done through observation, marking and feedback, discussions with the children and information gleaned from online platforms.

The PE subject leader will monitor standards through lesson observations, pupil conferences and planning audits.

Three times a year (Autumn Term, Spring Term, Summer Term), teachers make formal judgements of the children’s attainment and progress in Physical Education. This is submitted to the subject leader for review and discussed with the the Headteacher. During this meeting, any support needed is identified and action plans are amended.

Fabulous Physical Education What We Intend To Do “Never set limits, go after your dreams, don’t be afraid to push the boundaries.
