Introduced in 2011, the pupil premium is a sum of money given to schools by the government each year to improve the attainment of groups children who may be at risk of underperforming.
This is based on research showing that children from lower income families perform less well at school than their peers. Children who are entitled to the pupil premium may benefit from greater levels of intervention and support, or may have access to a trained therapist.
Pupil Premium is additional funding that can help resource some of these strategies. Schools are given pupil premium for:
- Children who have qualified for free school meals at any point in the last six years. The school received £1,515 for each of these children.
- Children who are or who have been looked after by the local authority for more than one day. These children are awarded a premium of £2,630
- Children from service families who receive a child pension from the Ministry of Defence. They are awarded £350.
