Outdoor Learning
For at least half a day every week, each class has a timetabled ‘Outdoor Learning’ slot. Many of these sessions take place in the neighbouring National Trust woodland, where we have a dedicated area of the forest. Children get up to all sorts of activities, from building dens to researching minibeasts. Our Outdoor Learning has been designed to allow children to explore the great outdoors whilst linking their expereinces to the National Curriculum. Follow-up sessions back in the classroom help link the indoors with the outdoors and also consolidate learning. Our pupils at Sherborne certainly know a great deal about our local wildlife and this stays with them throughout their lives.
Benefits of Outdoor Learning
We believe that spending time outdoors is an important part of every child’s learning journey. Connecting with nature gives children the chance to develop healthy habits that support both their physical and mental wellbeing. Outdoor learning offers quiet moments for reflection and stillness, as well as opportunities to work together, problem-solve, and build strong friendships. Whether they are exploring woodland spaces, taking part in active play, or simply pausing to notice the world around them, children discover how being in nature can bring both energy and relaxation. These experiences not only enrich their learning but also nurture a sense of calm, resilience, and teamwork that stays with them for life.
