The Local Governing Board (LGB) and the Corinium Education Trust
Governance within The Corinium Education Trust is built on a robust three-layered structure that ensures accountability. This framework brings together Members, Trustees, and Local Governing Bodies, each with distinct roles and responsibilities, as outlined in the CET’s Scheme of Delegation.
Local Governing Bodies play a vital role in supporting schools within the Corinium Education Trust. Acting as a link between the Trust Board and individual schools, Local Governing Bodies work to ensure each school thrives and upholds a clear vision, values, and direction that reflect the Trust’s overarching goals.
Key responsibilities include:
- Acting as a critical friend by providing guidance and challenge to school leaders.
- Ensuring the school has a clear vision, ethos, and strategic direction.
- Monitoring academic standards, pupil outcomes and attendance
- Supporting safeguarding, special educational needs, and equality practices.
- Ensuring the voices of parents, pupils, and staff are heard, creating strong connections within the school community.
- As a Church school, the Sherborne Local Governing Body upholds the school’s Christian ethos and distinctiveness.

I have been teaching in small and medium-sized schools throughout Gloucestershire since 1997. I became Headteacher of Down Ampney in January 2021.
It’s an absolute joy to still have a teaching commitment and be able to lead and mentor colleagues while maintaining that vital classroom connection.
I am fortunate to lead a dedicated and talented team and to enjoy the support and assistance of an active governing body, diocese and PTA.

As a relatively new governor I feel I have a huge amount to learn however my particular interest is in the provision of help to children with special needs and I have taken on the role of liaising between the school and the governing body on this issue. This is a particularly important period as the government is making major changes to how extra help will be delivered in schools and who will qualify to receive it.
I currently sit as a magistrate in the Family Court in Gloucester, where it is often all tooapparent what a vital role education plays in shaping a child’s future. Primary schools like Sherborne are the places where the foundations for a good education are established and a life long interest in the world outside can be generated.
